Monday, May 5

Tuesday, May 6

Introductions and Overview of National Trails System (Marshall and Werner) - 45 min.

“The Strategy for Preserving Historic Trails”
Overview of OCTA's Trail Preservation Work (shorter version of Dave Welch's Duluth presentation, adapted to responses from trail organizations if they are obtained beforehand) - 45 min.
9:30 am Presentations by "committed" historic trail organizations (responses to questions on last page of strategic plan draft), seven trails, 12 minutes each (Lewis & Clark, Trail of Tears, Santa Fe, Overmountain Victory, Old Spanish, Iditarod, Nez Perce). - 85 min (+ a 10 minute break in between)
11:05 am Land Use Planning by federal agencies (Sara Schlanger, BLM; someone from FS & NPS; possibly someone with an Eastern U.S. perspective)
Noon Catered lunch at BLM Training Center

Essential Tools for Trail Preservation - (Welch and Fryman) 180 min.
1:00 pm Applicable Laws and Regulations (i.e., Section 106). What do they do and how to use them. Also, the distinction between public and private property and what can be done.
2:00 pm MET techniques (mapping, classification)
2:45 pm Break
3:00 pm Monitoring trails
4:00 pm VRM – Visual Resource Management - What is it and how is it applied? What is its role in trail preservation? (BLM, NPS, & USFS perspectives) – 60 min
5:00 pm Adjourn workshop
Tuesday evening: possible visit from Juan Bautista de Anza

Wednesday, May 7
6:30 am Field Trip to Sonoran Desert National Monument

- Application of MET techniques

- Viewshed management (VRM etc.)

- Mitigation (preservation project)

Noon Box lunch at Sonoran Desert National Monument
1:30 pm SUVs return to Phoenix
2:30 pm 
SUVs arrive at the Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park
Tour of Museum & Program
4:00 pm Discussion of lessons learned from field work; general discussion of trail preservation; Update on implementation of BLM National Scenic & Historic Trails Strategy.

Thursday, May 8
8:00 am   Resources for implementation. Where can help be found? What can the BLM provide? What can the NPS provide (challenge cost-share)? What can private partners provide? How can Trust for Public Land, The Conservation Fund, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation help? - 60 min.
9:00 am Roundtable discussion - What can be done for each trail? (Use the issues raised in Item 3 and the possible capabilities and tools outlined in Item 4 to discuss preliminary plans for each trail (resource requirements, training, etc.). - 120 min.
11:00 am Re-visit the “Strategy for Preserving Historic Trails,” Part I

- Trail specific issues and concerns

- Draft revisions and additions

- Implementation of the strategy
